Hello? September? Where ya at?

I was rudely awakened in the wee hours of this morning by a really ominous thunderstorm. I lay in bed until it was time to get up, but I think I probably scored about 4 hours of sleep. The rain stopped right before I left for the bus, but the ride was a chilly one, with mist and temperatures in the mid-50s. As I acclimate to the temperature shift, I usually consider 50°F the breaking point where shorts are no longer viable. Today's temperatures were a shock, and I'm not the only one to notice it, either. It was even chillier, windier and mistier on the way home. Wait a minute... This is October weather!

Upon arriving downtown, I also realized I'd forgotten my wallet. Everything else was accounted for, including some leftovers I'd brought along for lunch. No coffee or anything from the soda machines to wake me up today. The corporate trough is sufficiently vile to avert me even in these dire circumstances.

I ended up taking the bus both ways today. Tomorrow doesn't look much better. I think it's about time to find the fall/spring transition gear and prepare for that wonderful phase of the weather cycle where I have to carry multiple changes of clothes. Oh, the joy.

P.S. - By this time next week, I'll be in San Francisco for training. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be able to ride much out there. Oh well.

I heard this morning of severe thunderstorms in KC. Then this afternoon I listened to the BBC describe KC as the most unfriendlist city in the US.

Geez Noah, thanks for hanging in their!

Hi Noah:

I think our weather here in Omaha is roughly the same as yours in KC. I chose the bus yesterday, too, because of the rain. Then in the afternoon, I went shopping and got some cooler weather gear, plus a cycling rain jacket.

This morning's ride was awesome... chilly, low 40s, but the wicking baselayer from neck to ankle under shorts and a couple of shirts made all the difference in the world.

To echo Tom... hang in there, Noah.

Hey guys... thanks for the well wishes. If you don't know, I was actually in that BBC segment for a few seconds, and helped the BBC chaps fix a flat they'd gotten.

Low 40's is definitely colder than we have here right now. It's around 50 in the mornings, which, when I'm fully acclimated to the chilliness, is my breaking point of long sleeves vs. shorts. I often do the thermal wicking base layer under the shorts thing. That works really well but looks positively goofy. Then, I remember that riding a bicycle in the midwest looks goofy, period. And wearing reflective clothing adds to it. I'd bet people don't even notice my long johns.

This morning, I just wore cargo pants, and a wicking thermal long-sleeve under my usual short-sleeve running shirt. My thermal base layer was a cheapo from target, and I found these "DRI-MORE" running shirts and athletic shorts at wal-mart for $6 each. The shirts aren't as comfy as UnderArmour but for almost 1/10 the price, I won't complain. They do wick sweat well, and they do dry fast in my cubicle without any help. Maybe I should write a review on them sometime.

I too make use of wally's ole cheapo's. The loose fitting shirts are actually lighter in weight than the more expensive ones I own: to me they are much more comfy. As for my winter needs I found Sierra Trading Post to be very accommodating, mid weight base layer "running" tights and turtle necks for under $13 a piece. Good quality, cheap, and comfy...Suh-weet.

Over here, we had the affects of a hurricane (tropical storm). Tons of rain on Saturday, but it looks to be pleasant the rest of the week.

I need to dig out my cool weather gear, too. We went from hot to chilly in a matter of days. Crazy.
