Brakes: You're Doing It Wrong!

... as seen on the bike/bus homeward commute. I have a new phone on the way. Hopefully it will have a better camera. I can't always get to my Canon for stuff like this.

It may not be right, but I bet that set up bites stronger than ceramic brakes on a Ferrari!

LOL! You should have just handed that person a broomstick, Noah. Put into the spokes, I guarantee it'll stop that bike even FASTER!

It looks like something is happening with the Turkey Creek Trail. I know that Mission and Overland Park both discussed using stimulus funds for this. But it looks like work is being done in Merriam, near its current northern terminus. Do you have any insights on this? I'm guessing that if you knew anything, you probably would have posted ... but I am always hopeful.

I don't ever mess with the northern terminus, as when I do use it, I get on south of Sonic, north of Merriam Marketplace. I do believe the plan was to eventually extend it all the way to state line, where it'll continue on as part of a larger overall bike/ped trail system.

And yes, John and BluesCat, I'm sure those brakes grab like all get-out! I'm wondering how many face-plants this setup has led to.

Times are hard, and this is nowhere near the most "rigged" bike I've seen recently. Even if he had no choice (you can't tell nor judge, really) the guy was just trying to get home, and was happily using the bike and bus to do it. That's more than I can say for a lot of people in this town.

I meant to also say that this bike was set up like this because he was using 24" wheels on a mountain bike frame designed for 26"

This is a disaster waiting to happen! Yes, I'm sure the brakes bite terribly, but it's only a matter of time before the sidewall blows out. On a front wheel, this can have catastrophic consequences.

Frankly, I'm surprised that the tire has held up like this at all. When I broke a rear brake and it struck my rear tire, much like this -- ONCE -- I blew out the sidewall. It looks like this person has been riding like this for a while.

Wow. Spare parts bike? That is a first for me. I wouldn't have been able to resist asking about it.

Oh man wow, I wonder if it starts smoking if he has to apply them for any extended length of time. Good Pic :-)
