I'm thinking of a change...

I recently bought a domain, KC-Bike.net. I've been volleying on what I'm going to do to it. Initially, I was thinking of moving away from my blogspot domain name, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't use KC-Bike.net as a repository for my commuting-centric informative writing, product reviews, advice, and whatnot, and keep this website around for posting my ride reports, photographs, rants, and all that good stuff.

So, I'll let you guys vote. One vote per IP Address. Sorry for the cheesy look of my informal poll. I whipped it together in about 5 minutes at the coffee shop this morning. I'm not trying to make money blogging, but it does seem like a lot of my really good and useful content gets lost in the messes that are my daily rambling. I'd like to make the useful articles easier to find and more prominent. Personally, I think I will have to keep two separate sites to pull it off nicely.

Either way, KC-Bike.net will happen. At this point, it's just a matter of what I'm going to do with it.

Let me know what you think.

I actually think that the combination of rants, ride reports, advice and reviews really works for your site. You have to have some entertainment along with the more technical stuff.

What I would recommend is using a more customizable layout that you could put more navigation into. Your tags and archive links are waaay at the bottom of the page, which makes them pretty much invisible. The way the nav is layed out right now says that you would rather have users leave your site to read other blogs than read your archives (even if you didn't intend it that way).

My husband and I use a Wordpress blog with a variable width three column layout. http://www.visualfuture.com/davetech/

I've been thinking about re-arranging the sidebar, too. There's a TON of labels, so I may put together a custom list of 10 or so labels that would be handy. I shuffled things around to be a little more logical (to me). Thanks for your input.

Once the .net is in place, it's only a matter of time before this one gets abandoned. May as well get it over with.

My last blog directs everyone to amidnightrider on the front page.

You'd think so, but I actually maintain several other sites and blogs, not all of which are here on Blogger. Blogger is where I host random projects that I don't expect to take off. I was wrong about my bike commuting stuff.

I'm an accomplished writer, published in a few different journals and trade publications. There are some days that I really could make 8 or 9 posts to kc-bike. I usually have to TRY to hold back to 10-12 per week. That's why a lot of my posts are really long.

What would happen if I split them up?

The one with lots of juicy premium content would get posted to perhaps once per week. Meanwhile, the other one would be a sandbox full of random thoughts and observations as I helplessly slip deeper and deeper into the bicycle lifestyle.

I think I'd keep the current site as a blog for personal stuff, and use the .net name for a resource-style site (not necessarily built around a blog, although a news blog could be a component of the site) about cycling in KC - all types of cycling, not just commuting. Directories of bike shops, bike clubs, trails, routes, events, blogs, etc. Obviously, most of that info is already available elsewhere, but I don't think there's one site that pulls it all together in one place - that's what I'd aim for.

Given the fact that I'm friends with all the people behind the cycling resource sites (namely kcbike.info and localcycling.com, -- both of which are stellar sources of information for bike racing, events, advocacy, and other bike/ped relavent information -- I don't feel like stepping on people's toes. Plus, between those two sites, most everything bicycling in KC gets coverage.
